Abstract (EN): Introduction: Our aim was to evaluate the available scientific literature and the existing evidence of the validation of using lateral cephalometric imaging in orthodontics. And also to observe the accuracy and reliability of lateral cephalometric views. Method: A systematic review was performed by searching specific keywords on electronic databases: Ovid Medline, Scopus and the Web of Science. Two reviewers selected relevant articles based on predetermined inclusion criteria. The electronic search was followed by hand search of the reference lists of the relevant papers. Results: The initial search revealed 784 articles listed in Medline (Ovid), 1034 listed in Scopus and 264 articles listed in Web of Science . The second step of the search protocol was to retrieve the reference lists of the articles selected which yielded 14 additional articles of interest. The final stage yielded 16 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were selected for qualitative synthesis. Conclusion: The existing literature suggested that lateral cephalogram is used without adequate scientific evidence about its usefulness and is often used prior to treatment.
