Objectives, activities and expected/achieved results

The main aims of the project are to:

(1) Validate NIRS readings against standard blood-gas exams for monitoring oxygenation status, hemoglobin concentration, and lactate during cardiac surgical procedures withcardiopulmonary bypass;

(2) Validate NIRS readings as a means to detect insufficient myocardial protection during cardioplegia administration in a swine model of cardiopulmonary bypass;

(3) Explore the potential role of NIRS profiling in the detection of coagulation disorders and excessive inflammatory activation during cardiopulmonary bypass;

(4) Explore the potential of percutaneous application for proof-of-concept point-of-care;

(5) Establish a mechanistic association of molecular biomarkers and clinical status with NIRS signal patterns;

(6) Develop and deploy predictive models.
