Objectives

The objective is to develop a technical-scientific work, with an original contribution, in the domain of Health Sciences. This involves the preparation and writing of a Master dissertation, with rigorous technical and scientific standards. The dissertation's subject, content and organization will be defined under the supervisor(s) of the thesis. The thesis will be subjected to public final examination, according to the regulations of the Porto University and other relevant legislation. Alternatively the student may prepare a monograph , which will also be evaluated in public tests at the end of the school year.

At the end of this course, the students should have achieved the learning outcomes described in article 15 of the Law n.º11 5/2013 of the 7th august of 2013.

Learning outcomes and competences

Choice, planning, scheduling, development and writing of an original work in one of the following forms: literature review or research project. Public presentation defense of  the work.Students start the research projects properly supported by supervisors. Students must initiate the drafting of
the literature review and the practical work that will lead to his/her Master Thesis dissertation. This approach
allows students to gain solid and in-depth knowledge on the topic of their dissertation thesis. The autonomous work of the student, with the supervision of the advisor(s), will provide him/her the means to elaborate a well written and comprehensive document on an advanced topic in Oncology, as well as the ability to present the main results of the research work in a clear and unambiguously way.

All those acquired during the academical year of the Master in Oncology

Program

The syllabus will be established by the advisor(s) of the dissertation in function of the topic in the area of

Health Sciences that will be investigated, accordingly with the current legislation.

For the academic year 2018/2019, the summary of the proposal will be delivered to the dirctor of the Master course until 30 September 2018.

The results of the assessment of the proposal, including advice and acceptability conditions (or the reasons for rejection) shall be forwarded to the student by e-mail in 20 business days.

The specific bibliography for the development of the work should be provided by the orientation team of the master dissertation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The students identify a topic to develop and contact faculty members from University of Porto or other research/teaching institutions, PhD holders within the scope of the scientific field of Health Sciences. The individual work is developed (self-learning) under supervisor/monitoring  of a supervisor and co-supervisor.

In accordance with legislation at the University of Porto the evaluation is final.
The evaluation is made by assessing the written paper, its presentation and the public discussion. The evaluating jury is composed of a president (professor with the degree of Doctor), an arguer (expert in the field) and the supervisor (or co-supervisor).

The evaluation criteria are based in the quality of the developed work, the oral presentation and discussion.

The result is expressed on a 20 point scale. All students with a grade equal to or higher than 10 are approved.

Internship work/project

The project work will focus on the area of knowledge in Oncology.

According to the Standards for Evaluation and Pedagogical Orientation of the University of Porto.

Should be performed according to the schedule approved by the Pedagogical Council.
