The Doctoral Program in Areas of Basic and Applied Biology (GABBA) started in the academic year of 1996/1997 from the merger of 4 MSc Programs in the University of Porto, from the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) and the Abel Salazar Institute for Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS). The Program is organized by the three involved schools, in articulation with the i3S Research Unit, which integrates IBMC (Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology), INEB (Institute of Biomedical Engineering) and IPATIMUP (Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology) that contribute with researchers and facilities for students training.
The Program has, also, strong collaborations established with other higher education and research institutions, national and international.
The total length of the Program is 4 years, with a first academic semester with theoretical, practical and laboratorial modules. At the end of this semester students have the opportunity to visit labs and to interview possible supervisors in order to choose where and with whom they will carry their PhD thesis work.
The Scientific Commission of GABBA is constituted by:
Prof. António Amorim (Director)
Prof. Manuel Sobrinho Simões
Prof. Fátima Carneiro
Prof. Alexandre do Carmo
Prof. João Relvas
Prof. Claudio Sunkel
and by the Emeritus Prof. Maria de Sousa as an honorary member.
