Environmental Contamination by Toxins

TCAEM02 - ECTS

Exposure and Fate of Xenobiotics in the Organism

TCAEM03 - ECTS 1) provide students with an organic / systemic view on the Exposure and Fate of Xenobiotics in the Organism (based on the human organism and integrating with some examples of other species);

2) that students work on the theme in order to build an integrative perspective of the programmatic topics covered;

3) that students develop skills for rapid and critical decoding of information published within the scope of the curricular unit program;

4) that students gain more practical skills within the scope of the topics covered in the program.

Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Toxicity and Detoxification

TCAEM04 - ECTS

The program aims to prepare students to understand the adverse biological effects that result from environmental stress, toxins and drugs as well as the molecular mechanisms used by cells for detoxification and repair damage.

Environment and Public Health

TCAEM16 - ECTS

1) To learn fundamental and applied concepts on Environment and Public Health, and to get training in methods and techniques used in assessments, including new approaches (e.g. One Heath approach) necessary to address and overcome major environmental problems (e.g. pollution, zoonoses and other problems resulting from human population growth, climate changes).

 

2) To stimulate and develop the students’ interest for scientific research, their skills to continuously update their knowledge and training and to apply them in problem solving.

3) To develop the students capability to work in a team, in an integrated and multidisciplinary way.

 

4) To develop the students’ autonomy and their skills to promote consensual choices, to analyse and discuss results, make decisions and communicate results, risks and decisions to different types of audience in distinct contexts.

Environmental Risk Assessment - Fundamentals

TCAEM15 - ECTS

- to get knowledge and training on the assessment, management and communication of environmental risks.

- to know the national and European regulation, institutions, frameworks and procedures for environmental risk assessment, management and communication (e.g. REACh, CLP)

- to get training on the environmental risk assessment, management and communication in diverse situations and contexts (e.g. chemical spills in the marine environment, climate changes, bioinvasions,...)

Stress ecology

TCAEM07 - ECTS

1) To get fundamental and applied concepts in the scope of Stress Ecology, and to get training in methods and techniques commonly used in stress ecology and ecotoxicology to assess the effects at population, community and ecosystem levels, as well as in new approaches necessary to address and overcome major environmental problems (e.g. climate changes, bioinvasions, pollution,  biodiversity lost).

 

2) To develop skills to get continuous upgrade of knowledge and training and to apply them in problem solving in the scope of Stress Ecology.

 

3) To develop the capability of working in a team, in an integrated and multidisciplinary way in the scope of Stress Ecology.

 

4) To develop autonomy and skills to promote consensual choices, to analyse and discuss results, make decisions and communicate results, risks and decisions to different types of audience in distinct contexts in the scope of Stress Ecology.

Advanced Ecotoxicology

TCAEM08 - ECTS

To learn fundamental, advanced and applied concepts of Ecotoxicology and get used to approaches and techniques used by routine in the assessment of ecotoxicity, as well as new methods and tools suitable for use in several of the potential scenarios that students may have to face during their professional careers.

To stimulate and develop the students motivation for scientific research, to train them in searching and selecting suitable scientific information, and let them recognise the need for continuous knowledge actualization.

To stimulate and develop the capability of the students to work in a team in an integrated and multidisciplinary way.

To promote the use of scientific knowledge to solve ecotoxicological problems.

Professional practice I/ Research stage/ external stage

TCAEM09 - ECTS

To provide students with methodologies for research and analysis of scientific questions, through an experimental approach based on a previous elaborated project, analysis and discussion of the obtained results and presentation of the results in oral and written formats. In the case of a training period, we intend to integrate the students in an industry/business/other sector, research center or state institution, by developing the work plan in that entity so as to obtain knowledge, aptitudes and competences in the specific areas of that entity with interest to MTCA.

Genetic Resistence to Pollutants

TCAEM17 - ECTS Acquisition of knowledge about genetic variability, methodology of gene analysis and manipulation and their implications on genetic resistance or tolerance.

Aquisição de metodologias de pesquisa e análise de questões científicas, através da execução de^experimentação baseada em projetos previamente elaborados, análise e discussão dos dados obtidos e apresentação dos resultados sob a forma oral e escrita.

Em alternativa, integração num contexto empresarial, centro de investigação ou entidades do estado, desenvolvendo o seu plano de trabalhos nessa instituição de forma a poderem ganhar conhecimentos, aptidões e competências nas áreas específicas de interesse da entidade e do MTCA.
