Objectives

> To increase knowledge about normative language and communication development, including special cases like bilingualism and second language acquisition. Other topics of special interest of this program are the emergent and early literacy, and the measurement/assessment of language and communication abilities.
> To introduce students to language and communication disorders: Etiology, assessment and intervention.

Program

1. INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Language and communication.
Central themes and issues in the study of language development.
2. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND FIRST LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Major steps in language acquisition.
Prelinguistic communication.
Phonological, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic development across preschool and school years.
Assessment of the productive and receptive language and communication skills.
Early sign language acquisition. Similarities and differences with spoken language acquisition.
3. BILINGUAL LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Types of childhood bilingualism and contexts of acquisition.
Bilingualism: phonological, lexical and syntactic development.
Theoretical issues in childhood bilingualism.
4. LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION DISORDERS
Children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI).
Language development in atypical children (e.g., mental retardation, autistic spectrum disorder, neurological disorders, deafness and other hearing impairments).
Assessment and intervention: Central questions.
5. EMERGENT LITERACY IN PRESCHOOL CHILDREN
The concept of emergent literacy.
