Objectives
This subject intends that the students acquire:
- Knowledge of the main events and theories throughout the History of Psychology;
- Knowledge of the main epistemological theories;
- Ability to apply the epistemological theories to psychological sciences;
- Development of autonomous learning skills and critical analysis.
Learning outcomes and competences
- Think critically about the History of Psychology;
- Ability to perspective the current learning in the field of psychology according to its history;
- Ability to approach complex authored texts, analyzing them critically.

Program
1. THE CRITIQUE OF SCIENCE
- What is epistemology? Internal and external epistemology;
- What is science? The scientific community; stereotype of science and its deconstruction;
- The structure and development of science. French and Anglo-Saxon historicist traditions; Khun's Theory of Scientific Revolutions;
- Critical epistemologies: science and democracy; Scientific rationality and the emergence of social criteria of truth; validity and legitimacy.
2. THE HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY
- The history: problematization of its construction;
- The axes of production of psychological knowledge.
2.1. THE ORIGINS
- From physiology and philosophy to psychology - the sensation as a frontier object; the laboratory of Leipzig and the figure of Wilhelm Wundt.
2.2. LATER DEVELOPMENTS
2.2.1.Phenomenological theories and models: the analysis of an epistemology derived from ontology
- Theoretical, meta-theoretical and methodological characterization of psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and humanistic perspectives;
- The centrality of experience, the lived and the production of subjectivity.
2.2.2 From processing and mediation to cognitive construction
- Functionalism and structuralism
2.2.3 Rationalist and post-rationalist (constructivist) cognitivist models
3. CRITICAL EPISTEMOLOGICAL POSITIONS: SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONISM, CRITICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND INTERSECTIONALITY
- Reference to feminist epistemology, epistemology of practice and epistemologies of the south through, respectively, the history of gender studies, non-normative sexualities and racism;
- Epistemology and politics: populism and infox/fake news.

Eligibility for exams
The students must have the minimum of 9.5 points in 20 at the global classification of the discipline. The final grade will be obtained by completing 3 written assignments, with equal weighting between them. The presence in class is mandatory according to the regulation in force in FPCEUP.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final grade is obtained through the average of the grades obtained in the 3 assignments.
