Objectives

At the end of the semester the student must be able to:

- Identify risk and protective factors in juvenile delinquency

- Relate the evolution in the juvenile justice system with different approaches to delinquency

- Improve the knowledge of youth justice policy and practice in Portugal

- Identify the basic components of successful preventive interventions in youth crime

- Identify the basic principles and strategies of the cognitive-behavioral interventions in juvenile delinquency

- Identify the basic principles and strategies of family-based interventions in juvenile delinquency

 

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended that the student is able to understand the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency in the different dimensions of assessment and intervention, specifically: evaluation of the risk of violence, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Students should also be able to analyze the fundamentals of the current juvenile justice systems and practices in relation to criminal policy towards delinquency in order to develop the skills necessary for their future actions as psychologists.

1. EVALUATION OF CRIME AND JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
 Measures of crime. Criminal statistics; self-report measures.Victimisation surveys. Risk and protective factors of juvenile delinquency. Forensic evaluation. Evaluation of crminogenic needs. Risk evaluation.


2. JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM
Major developments in the juvenile justice system. The principle of welfare in youth justice. The justice model. Nature and limitations of the welfare vs. justice debate. Key elements in restorative justice. Restoration, reconciliation and conflict resolution. The portuguese youth justice system.

3. PREVENTION OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
Definition issues. Characteristics and principles of efective prevention programs. Strategies associated with the implementation of efective preventive programs.

4. COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral interventions. Emotional regulation strategies: principles and programs. Intervention in moral reasoning: principles and programs. Interventiosn based in the development of social skills.


5. FAMILY-BASED INTERVENTIONS FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
The relationship family/delinquency. The eficacy of family-based interventions. Family-based programs.

Eligibility for exams

The attendence to classes is not mandatory.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final mark (in a 0 to 20 points rating scale) is obtained through the following calculation:
- Two exams (80% weighing): These exams will take place during the semester according to a schedule to be fixed. In each of the exams the student must obtain a minimum score of 8 points.
- Work group (20% weighing): Consists of a group work to be developed during the semester and presented in one of the classes on a subjetc within the focus of the classes.

In each of the evaluation components, the student must obtain a minimum score of 10 points.

For successfully completing the course, students must achieve a final mark of 10.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Do not exist.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In accordance with the regulations of the Faculty.

Classification improvement

Students will be able to register for an exam in case of failure or lack of tests at the time of appeal in the year in which the student attended UC.

As for the improvement of classification, this is foreseen only once, until the time of appeal of the school year subsequent to the one in which they obtained approval and in which the curricular unit has foreseen examination.

The final classification in the curricular unit is the highest, between the one that had been obtained initially and the one that results from the improvement of classification made.
