Objectives

1. Acquaintance with experimentation on Social Psychology.
2. Designing and implementing experiments in several Social Psychology research fields.
3. Introduction to concepts related to the Social Psychology Laboratory.
4. Ethical considerations on social psychological experimental research .

Program

1. Introduction to Social Psychology laboratory practice throught the presentation, reproduction and discussion of classical experiments in the following fields:
a. Social influence processes (e.g. obedience to authority and conformity to the group)
b. Group processes (e.g. reactions to deviance and the emergence of leadership)
c. Stereotypes
d. Ethnocentrism, prejudice and social discrimination
e. Impression formation
f. Intervention in emergencies
g. Rumour
h. Causal attributions
2. Experimental design in Social Psychology: experimental control and construction of "real" situations in laboratory.
3. Concepts of “measure” and “validity” : concepts of construct, variable, and instrument; special instruments.
4. Ethical implications of social psychological experimentation : boundaries of experimentation – the importance of informed consent and debriefing; distinction between experimental manipulation and "deception”; anonymity and confidentiality.
