Abstract (EN): Not many Portuguese geographers have visited and studied Mozambique Island. However, given the tiny size of the territory, we can rightly say that it is a prime target for Portuguese Tropical geographical research. Analysing the maps and the internal structure of the works, there is no doubt that all these studies on Mozambique Island fall within the regional mode of geographical commentary: the priority given to the various forms of environmental determination, the careful observation of lifestyles, and the identification of the functional structure of the island’s village. Orlando Ribeiro’s studies contain a historicist inten- tion that is closely related to studies on the ‘Geography of Portuguese Expansion’ that the author characteris- tically published before his properly tropical phase, and which justifies the inclusion in this collection of his small study on the island of Ibo.
