Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences

The PhD programme in Educational Sciences of the University of Porto (Portugal) main goal is the development of original research in the scientifc area of education in close relationship with research projects based in the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE). The Centre is financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Study Plan:

1st and 2nd semesters
Structures and Dynamics in Research Work
: is mainly concerned with the ‘state of the art’ in research design and methods. The course focuses on the analyses of published research projects, debating their methodological paths, It aims to develop scientific research skills, and the capacity to identify relevant research questions.

Research Seminar
aims to contribute to the design and development of the students' project. The goal is that students can conceive and design a relevant and original research in education. Collective work in the seminar and tutorial individual supervision are integrated in the course.

The Thematic Seminar Issues in Contemporary Education deals with major themes and questions in the educational field and aims to develop a comprehensive and deeps knowledge of current debates in the education field.

3rd and 4th semesters
In these semesters the Doctoral Programme includes a Research Seminar (tutorial regime), Thematic Seminars, a Scientific Writing Seminar and Paper Presentation based on the research done by the students. These semesters aim to develop a more systematic tutorial contact in order to further elaborate the theoretical framework and methodological construction of the research.

5th and 6th semesters
During this period, students are expected to develop and write their theses. A Seminar will provide the support for this work. It is expected that students present 3 papers at inter(national) conferences and publish at least one paper in a peer-reviwed journal.

    • International students: ¤ 5.500
    • International students from CPLP: ¤ 3 025,00 (provided they submit a request to the Director asking for 50% reduction of the annual tuition)
