Objectives
This Unit aims to acquire knowledge and discuss subjects with relevance to contemporary Public Health. In this unit it is expected that the students get to know some of the major public health issues in the national and international arenas, namely regarding the burden of most communicable and non-communicable diseases in different settings and the policies directed to prevent treat and manage those conditions, at the local, regional national and international levels. Students are also expected to get to know overlapping areas between the practice of public health and a number of complementary areas of knowledge, such as environment, economy, work, or the organization of urban space.
Learning outcomes and competences
Students are expected to acquire a vast, multidisciplinary vision of public health theory and practice. In this unit, we have designed an approach to public health in its widest expression, as opposed to other units where syllabi are necessarily more rigid. By hearing and discussing the experience of a large number of experts in several topics that are defined each year, students gain access to a body of knowledge and experience that widen the horizons of their perspective on public health.

These Seminars will address varying specific topics on subjects such as policy making, health administration, the impact of the economic and financial crisis on population health, challenges in the design and implementation of national health programs, effects of inequalities on community health and translational research in public health (with special emphasis on methodological challenges in the production of scientific evidence of the highest quality in the areas of public health and epidemiology).

Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures on topics of interest in public health will be conducted by experts in different areas, allowing students to have contact with health policy and public health research, which is essential, not only for their general training but also for the selection of topics for dissertation. The discussion with guests is a unique opportunity for students to understand the integration of the different disciplines involved in public health.

Eligibility for exams
Students need to attend at least 75% of the classes.
Students workers that are granted the corresponding status should contact the main responsible at the beggining of this UC.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final evaluation of this UC includes a written test with 5 open questions about any of the topics addressed during the 18 seminars. Attendance to the seminars scheduled will be considered for the final grade.
Final grade= Written test (80%) + Attendance (20%).
Students workers that are granted the corresponding status are exempted from participation in classes and therefore the final grade will only consider the written test (100%).
