Objectives
To acquire basic knowledge on the ageing process, particularly its likely causes and intervening mechanisms.
To learn key-concepts of gerontology, historical aspects of the subject, its evolution and the curent frontiers, with the help of internationally recognized scientists.
To set forth scientific problems of the field and methodological strategies to solve them.
To understand the current experimental models of ageing, with emphasis on cell models.
Learning outcomes and competences
Perception of the current biological frontier in Gerontology.
Understanding and integration of biological mechanisms and experimental models of ageing.
Recognition, by direct contact, of the role of the laboratory in the study of biogerontology.
Capacity to enunciate biological problems in gerontology and to organize a strategy to their resolution.
Ability to analyze scientific literature in the fielf of gerontology.
Working method
Presencial
Program
Ageing overview. Key concepts, causes and mechanisms.
The essence of ageing: progressive molecular and celular lesions.
The role of telomeres. Cell repairing processes, with emphasis on mechanisms of DNA and protein repair.
Models and methods in cell ageing: Hayflick and Stress Induced Premature Senescence (SIPS) models. The study of organism ageing.
The role of nutrition and metabolism. Energy restriction.
The role of genes. Survival pathways and hormesis.
Biological aspects of human, or mammalian, ageing in different organ or systems.
To prolong life or to mitigate ageing.
The SIPS model of cell ageing. How to establish it in the laboratory.
Accelerated ageing: biological foundation.
