Objectives

This course aims to discuss health information exchanges (HIEs) between clinical and public/population health data systems, to discuss the main categories and HIT standards and to discuss the standards harmonization process.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowledge

  • How to use information processing methodology and information technologies to store, organize and retrieve the increasing health and medical knowledge in a timely fashion

  • Value of high quality data for successful patient and institutional management

  • Standards in health and medical informatics: aspects of biomedical information management currently supported by standards, organizations involved and processes for creating standards

Skills

  • Appropriate documentation and health data management principles

  • Structure, design and analysis principles of the health record including notions of data quality, minimum data sets, general applications of the electronic health record

  • Data, information, and knowledge standards critical to the successful implementation of local, regional, and national health-related information systems.

  • Identify the appropriate level of Healthcare Information Technology Standard for an informatics problem, and select the appropriate standard within that level

  • Create use cases and an organizational process to define an interoperability standard for a specific healthcare situation

  • Participate in a national standards-creation process

Working method

Presencial

Program

  • What is a standard and need for health informatics standards

  • Standards organizations and the development process
