Objectives

The objectives of the curricular unit are to promote the application of concepts and methodologies from epidemiology to investigations using secondary data, in different areas of health research.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the curricular unit the students should be able to:

- identify and describe different sources of secondary data with potential interest for health research;

- for different research questions, to discuss the advantages, limitations and feasibility of investigations based on secondary data sources, according to the study design and sources of data.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The curricular unit will include theoretical and theoretical-practical/practical sessions, and autonomous work, supervised by the teacher. It is expected to correspond to an amount of work equivalent to 3 ECTS.

It is estimated that the Curricular Unit requires a total of 81 hours of work from the student, from which 27 are contact hours, distributed as follows:

- Theoretical classes (T): 5 h

- Seminar (S): 4 h

- Theoretical-practical classes (TP): 18 h

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Teste 50,00
Trabalho escrito 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 4,00
Frequência das aulas 23,00

Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of at least 75% of the theoretical-practical classes and seminars.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation will comprise two individual tests, to be performed in the theoretical and/or theoretical-practical classes, corresponding to 50% of the final classification, and a written group assignment, corresponding to 50% of the final classification.

The evaluation of the students with the student worker status will comprise the same components of evaluation.
