Using the specif language of cardiovascular physiology and anatomy and its basic and advanced concepts, the program intends to make the connection towards their pathophysiogical, and thus clinical, applicability.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expected to:

1) Acquire knowledge in applied cardiac anatomy and in advanced cardiovascular physiology concepts, from smooth and cardiac muscle physiology, through vascular and cardiac function regulation, and to integrated physiology concepts in special contexts like physical exercise;

2) Have a good knowledge of cardiovascular physiology and to be able to make a correct integration of its different domains;
3) Be able to apply the normal physiology concepts to pathophysiological contexts.

Working method



1) Macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the cardiovascular system.

2) Cardiac muscle.

3) Smooth muscle.

4) Ventricular function: systolic and diastolic function and dysfunction.

5) Electrophysiology.

6) Coronary circulation and oxygen supply. Muscle energetics. Cardiac metabolism.

7) Circulation. Blood pressure regulation and peripheral circulation.

8) Right heart physiology and pathophysiology.

9) Cardiovascular adaptation to physical exercise.

10) Cardiovascular system pathophysiology

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical lectures (20 hours), tutorials (4 hours) and seminars (3 hours). The first type are expositive lectures, and include 2 hours for the examinations, and the other two are intended to foster discussion and physiopathological integration of the concepts.
