Objectives

Transmit a detailed knowledge on the morphophysiology of the cardiovascular system, as well as some physiopathological principles.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expected to:

1) Acquire knowledge in applied cardiac anatomy and in advanced cardiovascular physiology concepts, from smooth and cardiac muscle physiology, through vascular and cardiac function regulation, and to integrated physiology concepts in special pathophysiological contexts;

2) Have a good knowledge of cardiovascular physiology and to be able to make a correct integration of its different domains;

3) Be able to apply the normal physiology concepts to pathophysiological contexts.

Program

1) Macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the cardiovascular system.

2) Cardiac muscle.

3) Smooth muscle.

4) Ventricular function: systolic and diastolic function and dysfunction.

5) Electrophysiology.

6) Coronary circulation and oxygen supply. Muscle energetics. Cardiac metabolism.

7) Circulation. Blood pressure regulation and peripheral circulation.

8) Cardiovascular system pathophysiology.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In order to accomplish the proposed objectives the students must attend theoretical lectures (10 hours), tutorials (2 hours) and seminars (1,5 hours). The first type are exposited lectures, and include 2 hours for the examinations, and the other two are intended to foster discussion and physiopathological integration of the concepts.
