Teaching language



To help the students to: 1. Acquire knowledge of diseases with surgical implications, emphasizing the semiological aspects; 2. Understand the physiopathologic mechanisms of those diseases; 3. Use the scientific method in the resolution of clinical problems (data collection, registration and analysis for decision making); 4. Perform the physical examination (controlled by filling a gesture notebook); 5. Hierarchisation of the complementary exams in a critical way; 6. Demonstrate the importance of the scientific bases of surgery.
To give students the opportunity of self-learning and development, emphasising their critical capabilities, imagination and the importance of the cost/benefit relationship. To encourage a good relationship with patients, friends and remaining personal, giving appropriate examples. Stimulate the critical appreciation of their progresses in learning and of the teacher’s performance.


LECTURES: Abdominal pain, Management of politraumatized patients, Perioperative medicine, Surgical stress and homeostasy, Multinodular goiter, Well differentiated thyroid carcinoma, Breast carcinoma, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Esophageal carcinoma, Gastric carcinoma, Colorectal cancer, Diverticular disease of the colon, Acute pancreatitis, Biliar stone disease, Pancreatic carcinoma, Morbid obesity, Investigation in surgery, Evidence based surgery, Follow-up of patients with surgical pathology, Nutrition of surgical patients.
SEMINARS: Presentaion and discussion of clinical cases.
GROUP WORK: Dysphagia, Perianal disease, hepatosplenomegaly, Nodule of the thyroid, Jaundice, Breast lump, Abdominal wall pathology, Intestinal obstruction, Occult gastrointestinal bleeding, Ascitis, Pain in lower abdominal quadrant of the abdomen.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Work meetings of the Surgery Service, lectures, tutorial practical work, group work, tutorial assisted work with the Service Director, clinical meetings, seminars and clinical training in the wards and in the Emergency Service.

Eligibility for exams

Practical exam performed by the assistant professor who directly accompanies the student in the presence of the coordinator. Theoretical exam of knowledge assessment: with 50 multiple choice questions each worth 0.3 (15 in total) and an essay question about 2 themes that are part of the expositions subjects for the students. Each theme is worth 2.5 (5 marks in total).
The assessment of the vascular surgery material is integrated in the test and in the practical trial.
For the final assessment, the result of the test represents 50%; and the remaining 50% result of the considered average of the continuous assessment with the practical exam.
The attendance certificate of achievement shall be awarded only if the student accomplishes the “notebook of skills” and has attended 80% of all of the educational activities.
