Abstract (EN): Biosorption of Cr(III), Cu(II) and Pb(II) from binary metal solutions onto Gelidium algae, algal waste and a composite material was investigated in batch systems, at pH 4 for Cu(II)/Cr(III) and pH 5.3 for Cu(II)/Pb(II). Three biosorbents have been tested, namely, algae Gelidium, algal waste from agar extraction industry and a composite material. The maximum uptake capacity followed the order: Pb > Cu > Cr. The interference of lead on copper uptake is stronger than on chromium. The experimental equilibrium data were well described by a discrete and a continuous equilibrium model. Three dimensional sorption surfaces were generated, describing the metal uptake as a function of the equilibrium concentration of both metals. From the discrete model, it has been possible to obtain the Langmuir affinity constant. The presence of co-cations decreases the apparent affinity of copper ions for the biosorbent binding sites.
