Curriculum Synthesis - 2025

- As a student, he voluntarily joined an Emergence team at H.St.António (NC) and collaborated in plastic and pediatric surgery, at H. Maria Pia-Porto and at H.de S.João da Madeira (JCR).
- He began his Medical Career in 1973, the year of "Clinical Practice" (HSJoão and VN Gaia- AAT), followed by the "Polyclinic" Internship at the St. António Hospital (NC and MJN), interspersed with the "Medical Service to the Periphery" (CS Longra and H. Amarante) and the "Mandatory Military" Service (CM St.Margarida and, in Porto at C. Reclusão M. and H. Militar).
- Hired as a military doctor in 1977, he was assigned to the surgery service of the HMP, where he collaborated in plastic surgery (MCC) and general surgery (ANV), and requested a termination contract in 1980 due to incompatibility of schedules.
- In 1978, after a national exam, he started the Complementary Internship in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, at H S. João, Porto (FG).
 - Already a specialist, he was hired as "Attaché des Hôpitaux" at the Service de Chirurgie Plastique, Reconstructive, Esthétique of the Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire de Bordeaux, France (JB), where, in 1982, he would acquire the title of Specialist in Microchirurgie by the Département des Techniques et des Recherches Chirurgicales Appliquées Université de Bordeaux (JP).
- An internship in Paris, at the Maxillofacial Service of the Hôpital Lariboisière (GJ) - In 1987 and 1989-
- he held two national public competitions to obtain the Graduation in Head of Service (senior hospital assistant) of Plastic Surgery (IPO and HS José) and another in 1988, for Graduation in Head of Service of Maxillofacial Surgery (IPO).
- He submitted to two national public tenders to be hired, first as a Specialist (hospital assistant), and then, in 1992, as Head of the Plastic Surgery Service of the HS João staff.
- Was appointed Director of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service of HS João (1996 to 2009), which he expanded with three new Units: Aesthetics, Maxillofacial Surgery and Burns (with training suitability in three specialities - PS, CMFS and IC-burns). It also expanded the medical staff (all of whom had internships in international departments, outside the country) and simultaneously transformed it into an academic service, with eleven PhD working: C. Plástica - JMA, HC, MG, AF, PF, RH, AC, JR, IS, RV, and in the Burns Unit - AR. It substantially increased the number of beds and the available operating time.
- His academic career began with public examinations for a PhD in Surgery (1991), followed by Aggregation (1997). He held public competitions for Assistant Professor (1992), Associate (1995) and Full Professor (1998), the 1st in surgery by public competition after 1976, at FMUP.
- He was appointed by the Scientific Council of FMUP: Director of the Experimental Surgery Service (1997 to 2018), Director of the Master's Degree in Orthognathic Surgery and Orthodontics and of different postgraduate courses (2003 to 2018).
- He conducted several curricular units at FMUP (2005 to 2018) – five of which he implemented by himself - and another at FMDUP (2001-2005).
- He was a member of the Scientific Council and the Equivalence Evaluation Committee of the Doctoral Program in Medicine (2007 to 2018).
- He was elected Director of the Faculty of Medicine, two terms (2001 to 2007), Director of the Department of Surgery and Physiology (2006 to 2018), member of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council (2000 to 2010) and member of the Advisory Board (2011 to 2018).
- He was elected Member of the Senate, of the Assembly of the U.P. (2001 to 2007) and of the General Council of the Foundation of the U.P. (2009 to 2017), – where he was a member of the Research and Internationalization Commission and chaired the Governance Committee (2014 to 2017), the Commissions for the election of two rectors (2010 and 2014) and for the election of the 3rd General Council (2017).
- Member of the Board of Directors of the Biomechanics Laboratory of the University of Porto, since 2013.
- Invited Full Professor-IUCS/CESPU (2020), where he chairs the Installing Committee of the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine and regent of UC Surgery and, in the BM degree, regent of History of Medicine, Clinical Clerkship and supervisor of master's theses (UCV-Spain students).
- He is also responsible for the scientific, pedagogical, and quality control of the project for the training of doctors and nurses in hospitals in Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde - Palop Expert Saúde (Instituto Camões - AESN). - He was the administrator and Clinical Director of the private Hospital HPBN, affiliated with FMUP (2008 to 2012), the first national Private Hospital affiliated with a Faculty of Medicine.
- He has participated in hundreds of national Competition Juries, of all grades of the Hospital and Academic Careers, some of which he has chaired. 
- Was responsible for the training of several Specialists in Plastic Surgery and other surgical specialties (some of whom were service directors). - Supervised several PhD Theses in surgery in several faculties: at FMUP (HC; MJC; MG; AF; PF; HR; RV, CJ), FMDUP(PC), ICBAS (CG) and UNL. (MAA) and numerous master's degrees.
- Two of his deputy sub-directors were later Directors of FMUP (MAF and ACP), and the manager he selected to jointly run HBN (FMUP-affiliated Hospital) is the CEO of GTS (BG).
- He has participated as a researcher in multiple projects, being the author of 220 international publications in full (in 1986, he was the first most cited author in the Journal of  Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery- British), and hundreds of communications, conferences, videos, book chapters and posters. - - In Scopus, it has an h-index of 25.
- Founded the first National Journal of Surgery and five Scientific Societies, being a member of 28 national and international Scientific Associations, some of which he chaired.
- Founder of the Acad. Port. de Med. Odontológica.
- Emeritus Member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine.
- Member of Acad. Letras e Artes.
- Awarded several times.
- He was elected professional of the year in 2009 and in 2011, by the Rotary Clubs of Porto Oeste and Matosinhos, respectively.
- Medal of Merit of the Portuguese Medical Association (2019).
- Professor Emeritus at the University of Porto, since 2019.
- Clinical activity developed in the public and private sectors, which he finished by motu proprio at the age of 76 (2025), having performed more than 31,000 interventions as a surgeon (in various anatomical regions and in different areas: aesthetic, congenital, oncological and traumatic surgery) and introduced new techniques and surgical procedures in his speciality, in Portugal and internationally.
