Information

Overview:
The Doctoral Program in Neuroscience of the University of Porto (PDN-UP) is a tailor-made program that enables students from multiple backgrounds to acquire the basic theoretical and practical skills necessary to develop a PhD thesis in various fields of neuroscience. During the first year, students attend a short core curriculum covering the fundaments of neurobiology. This is followed by a variety of optional units encompassing the main research topics in neuroscience at the molecular, cellular and systems levels, the various methodologies available and a number of related subjects from the engineering and physics domains. In addition, the students are asked to participate in three international advanced courses in the frontiers of neuroscience and to rotate through three different national or international laboratories of their choice. They are also given the possibility of attending a large assortment of seminars and participating in journal clubs. The Program offers a broad, multidisciplinary education guaranteed by the collaboration of various first line research units inside and outside the country and a large high profile faculty from the Medical, Science and Engineering Schools of UP and the Associate Laboratory IBMC/INEB. During the four year duration of their training, the students are counseled by a tutor as to their options in terms of curricular education and research project development. The program provides access to a rich national and international research environment within European training networks and as a member of NENS (Network of European Neuroscience Schools).
