Master Programme in Medical Informatics

InformationThe course/CS does not admit students in 2006/2007.
The practice of Medicine is becoming more dependent of the way clinical data is collected, processed and communicated. As a result, efficient and quality health care-giving may be intrinsically associated to decision making in appropriate places and time, based on patients’ information and on the knowledge of health professionals. In the same way, communication is essential in care-giving, research and health management as all these activities are the result of joint work.
In fact, an important part of the operational costs of a hospital is associated to the communication activities between professionals and between professionals and services users. The relevance of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the investigation and use of drugs, medical equipments and other technologies has continuously increased. The capability to manage and use these technologies will certainly be one of the most important pros in health institutions and will have an important impact on the efficiency of the upcoming health systems.
On the other hand, the vast majority of ICT projects will not be able to meet their objectives within a specific timeframe, budget and expectations, being one of the reasons pointed out its growing complexity, in a scientific, technological and normative domain, both in medical informatics and national and international regulations concerning clinical protocols.
Medical Informatics studies the theoretical aspects of information science which are specific to the understanding of biomedical data and practical application of information technology in health systems, aiming at improving security, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and availability of care-giving.
In this context, the Master in Medical Informatics aims at covering the lack of knowledge and expertise in this area, which are present in diverse classes of health professionals.
This programme covers a wide variety of scientific and technical themes such as: electronic medical records; coding and classification systems, ICT regulations in health; signal and image processing; electronic communications between care providers; decision support systems; implementation and assessment of information systems technologies.
This programme has been specially designed for medical doctors, nurses or other health professionals, computer scientists and computer engineers, who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in medical informatics, in order to apply them in their institutions, aiming at improving the delivery of health care.
