Master Degree Course in Psychiatry and Mental Health

Overview:

The Master Program in Psychiatry and Mental Health of the University of Porto has as main objective to provide training and promote scientific research in the area of Psychiatry and Mental Health. On the first two semesters, the students attend a basic syllabus which includes eight core courses with specific objectives and competencies including fundamental aspects on research methodology, abnormal behaviour and biological psychiatry, general psychopathology, psychiatric pathology (disturbance mood, psychosis, addictive behaviours), liaison psychiatry and psychosomatics, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, clinical sexology, mental health, culture and social sciences, psychodynamic psychotherapy.

The various core courses provide students with knowledge regarding the definition of common concepts and measures used in research studies and their suitability on psychiatric clinic, familiarizing them with functional neuroanatomy, neural development and neurogenesis of interest in psychiatry as well as with the most common signs and symptoms that could characterize the major psychiatric syndromes in children, adolescent, adult and geriatric population. It also aims to raise students’ awareness on the main conceptual trends in psychosomatic medicine, human sexuality and sexual dysfunctions and psychotherapy.

In addition, this program enables the reflection on problems and issues of society and their impact on behaviour and on the understanding of the relationship between psychiatry, social and normative sciences.
Students are supervised and advised by a mentor during the four semesters of their Master Program, especially in what concerns their research project.

Eligibility
:

Degree in medicine by portuguese or foreign medical schools or other Health Sciences:

1.Degree in Medicine by Portuguese medical schools

2.Degree in Medicine from a foreign University (a curricular assessment by the Scientific Committee will be carried out).

3.Degree in other health sciences
