Master Programme in Medical Informatics

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

OVERVIEW

Medical Informatics focuses on the theoretical aspects of information science specific to the understanding of biomedical data, information and knowledge and the practical application of information technologies to health care systems. Its aim is to improve security, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and availability of health care.
The master program will address a variety of scientific and technical issues such as: computer-based patient records in general practices and hospitals; coding and classification systems of diseases and procedures; norms and standards of ICT in the health domain; signal analysis and image processing; electronic communications between health care providers; decision support systems; and the implementation and evaluation of information systems and technologies.
This program has been specially designed for physicians, nurses and other health professionals, as well as for computer scientists or engineers who wish to improve their medical informatics skills and knowledge, and to apply them into their practice or their organization, aiming at improving the delivery of health care.

ELIGIBILITY

1— For the admission of the application, candidates should have a bachelor degree or equivalent, by a national or international academic institution, in the areas of life and health sciences, mathematics, computer science, informatics, science and information technology or similar areas.

2— When dully defended and after curriculum evaluation, the scientific committee of the study cycle may admit holders of other bachelors or other foreign university degrees, as long as the respective curriculum demonstrates an adequate level of scientific foundations.

Objectives

  • Possess knowledge and understanding skills that enable and constitute the basis for developments and / or unique applications in many cases in research settings.
  • Apply their knowledge and skills to understand and solve problems in new and unfamiliar situations, inbroad and multidisciplinary contexts and disciplines, although related to theirfield of studies;
  • Integrate knowledge, deal with complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including considerations on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities thatresult from those solutions and judgments or influence them;
  • Communicate clearly and unambiguously their conclusions and the knowledge and reasoning underlying them, to experts or nonexperts;
  • Another aim is to enable students of skills and knowledge in the areas of Information Sciences, HealthSciences and Technology Assessment and Information Systems.
