Metabolism - Biopathology and Experimental

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The masters in Metabolism – biopathology and experimental (MBE), extends for 4 semesters (120 ECTS) and concentrates the curricular component in the first 2 semesters, being the latter two devoted to the development of the master’s thesis/ internship. The curricular component of the master’s degree may be titled by a diploma issued by
FMUP.
In the first semester the students receive training on the metabolism, nutrition, pathological processes and laboratory medicine.
In the 2nd semester, the student is informed about the underlying mechanisms of the disease such as biological rhythms, aging, oxidative stress, and metabolic disease related processes. The UC metabolic disease (9 ects) consists of 3 clinical modules in the areas of endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology, in which the student will have contact with a hospital environment. The main technical approaches of cell cultures and in vivo models used for the study of metabolism will also be provided.

Objectives

The transdisciplinary nature of this area of medicine requires the involvement of elements with very diverse formation.
For this reason the program aims to introduce students from different backgrounds, who initiate a research career, with knowledge of the functional organization and physiological regulation of metabolism, the mechanisms involved in disease, therapeutic targets, and methodologies available for their analysis. Students acquire an enlarged perspective on the biopatology of metabolic diseases, which should accompany them in the deepening of specific topics throughout their posterior formation (PhD degree and post-doctoral). In addition, the program ensures scientific education to health professionals in areas linked to metabolic disorders, and provides specialized training for research technician positions, scientific manager or organizer of scientific events.

Specific entry requirements:

Bachelor degree (“Licenciado”) obtained at Portuguese or foreign universities. Given the subjects’ transversality, as well as the need to train professionals in this area from distinct backgrounds, holders of bachelor’s degree in scientific domains related to life sciences, health sciences, but also in the domain of engineering, chemistry, physics or mathematics. Candidates with other background education can be accepted with the agreement of the Master Scientific Committee.
