Molecular Medicine and Oncology

OVERVIEW

The Second Cycle of Studies (MSc programme) is made up of a lectural part with core and optional curricular units. These may include the attendance of seminars or courses, and to undertake short-term internships in various institutions.

It is expected that the interdisciplinarity of the activities of this part will endow the student with the recognition of specific areas of interest and will generate ideas and problems to become the starting point for the preparation of a project, whose development will base the elaboration of a dissertation and the achievement of the academic degree.

Its implementation can be made in institutions that collaborate with the MSc Program or in others, duly qualified and considered appropriate by the scientific committee.

The MSc Program is organized by the Faculty of Medicine of Porto (FMUP), in conjunction with the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS), IPATIMUP and IBMC/INEB, now associated in the i3S, Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, the University Hospital of S. João and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto.

Some topics: Molecular Biology, Cell Cycle and Apoptosis, Human Genetics and Disease, Oncobiology, Molecular Cytogenetics, Angiogenesis in Inflammation and Cancer, Pharmacogenomics and Molecular Epidemiology, Heart Failure, Epigenetics and Cancer, Endocrine Pathology, Gerontology, Molecular Biology Techniques (Hands on unit).

The MSc degree has an important laboratory orientation. It is meant to consolidate knowledge in the biomedical field, to stimulate the interest in its deepening, to encourage to put problems forth and to design strategies for its resolution, employing Molecular Biology methods.

ELIGIBILITY

1- It is especially intended for graduates in Life Sciences (including, among others, Biology, Biochemistry, Aquatic Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Basic Health Sciences, Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Microbiology, Health Technologies and other, related sciences), with a minimum classification of 14 out of 20, obtained in Portuguese institutions of Higher Education or with legally equivalent qualification.

2- Graduates with classification under 14 can be admitted to the MSc Program following a curricular evaluation by the scientific committee.

3 - Holders of degrees awarded by foreign universities may also be admitted, after curricular evaluation, by the scientific committed.

UNIDADES CURRICULARES SINGULARES/SINGULAR COURSE UNITS 2019/2020

Objectives

The Second Cycle of Studies in Medicine and Molecular Oncology aims to consolidate knowledge in the biomedical field, to arouse interest in its deepening and to encourage attitudes of problem placement and resolution, strategy design and application of Molecular Biology methods.

It is oriented to laboratory practice in view of the nuclear nature of the «hands on» unit "Molecular Biology Techniques", the elaboration of a dissertation based on laboratory work and the inherent need to carry it out in a research laboratory environment.

Thus, a MSc graduated in Molecular Medicine and Oncology has relevant laboratory qualification, is able to interpret scientific publications in the field, to organize a scientific text and to disseminate it among the pairs with their own language.
