At the end of this unit, students are expected to obtain knowledge on epidemiological concepts and methods, and its application to the critical appraisal and planning of epidemiological studies. Students should be familiar with conceptual and organizational characteristics of surveillance systems and screening programs, namely regarding the decision process, and evaluation of quality and effectiveness.At the end of the curricular unit the students are expected to be acquainted with the specific language of a new scientific area, being able to recognize, describe and relate different frequency and association measures, the concepts of random error, bias, confounding and interaction, as well as the main study designs used in epidemiology. The students are expected to accomplish, autonomously: simple epidemiological tasks, such as data tabulation and calculation of measures of disease frequency and association; critical appraisal of scientific articles.
It is intended that students acquire knowledge and skills to identify, classify the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the main tools of statistical inference;
Understand and apply the interconnection of the research with the data statistical treatment of the in the presentation of the study results.
