Courses Units

Comunication and human relations


It is expected that the student demonstrates competencies in the following domains:

Constructing cognitive frameworks for interpreting and analyzing communication situations and human relations

Mastering communication processes and techniques


School curriculum and education for health


To acquire knowledge in the area of education and curriculum related to theoretical models on health education in the school curriculum that lead to the identification of advantages / disadvantages of the different approaches in the overall training of students.
To develop competencies of analysis of health education projects in the school;
To design a health education project



At the end of this unit, students are expected to obtain knowledge on epidemiological concepts and methods, and its application to the critical appraisal and planning of epidemiological studies. Students should be familiar with conceptual and organizational characteristics of surveillance systems and screening programs, namely regarding the decision process, and evaluation of quality and effectiveness.

At the end of the curricular unit the students are expected to be acquainted with the specific language of a new scientific area, being able to recognize, describe and relate different frequency and association measures, the concepts of random error, bias, confounding and interaction, as well as the main study designs used in epidemiology. The students are expected to accomplish, autonomously: simple epidemiological tasks, such as data tabulation and calculation of measures of disease frequency and association; critical appraisal of scientific articles.

Information Sources and Systematic Review in Health Education

ES35 - ECTS This course aims to prepare students to identify, interpret and evaluate relevant health information available in scientific journals of reference, computer databases and sites of national and international organizations of recognized competence. The methodological foundations of systematic reviews, essential for the impolementation and critical appraisal of these studies will be adressed..

Statistical Concepts applied to health


It is intended that students acquire knowledge and skills to identify, classify the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the main tools of statistical inference;

Understand and apply the interconnection of the research with the  data statistical treatment of the in the presentation of the study results.

Thematic Seminars


This Unit aims to acquire knowledge and discuss subjects with relevance to contemporary Public Health. In this unit it is expected that the students get to know some of the major public health issues in the national and international arenas, namely regarding the burden of most communicable and non-communicable diseases in different settings and the policies directed to prevent treat and manage those conditions, at the local, regional national and international levels. Students are also expected to get to know overlapping areas between the practice of public health and a number of complementary areas of knowledge, such as environment, economy, work, or the organization of urban space.

Health Promotion Techniques

ES18 - ECTS The students should know the theories that underlie health promotion programs and the fundamental techniques for their implementation. Students should be able to design a health promotion program, identifying all of its components, such as the definition of objectives and targets, actions planning and strategies to perform the program evaluation.

Environment and Health


Violence determinants and prevention


To approach violence phenomena - since auto-inflicted violence, interpersonal violence, to collective violence. To discuss the most appropriate methodologies for the investigation of domestic violence, as well as the ethical and methodological challenges in population studies. To contact with some strategies for action on problems of violence in several contexts.

Medicines and Health


he aim of this curricular unit is to promote the acquisition of knowledge, on the development and use of medicines, that may be used to improve the capacity of the general population to acquire and to interpret essential information for the rational use of medicines.

Nutrition and physical activity in health


The main objective is to acquire knowledge on the relations between nutrition and physical activity in the development of chronic diseases, as well as, acquire concepts about research methods appropriated to the study of these behaviors in populations.


Prevention of dependencies


To characterize the use of addictive substances, focusing on the aspects of prevention in youth.


Prevention of Chronic Diseases


Acquisition of knowledge about the burden of the most prevalent chronic (non-communicable) diseases and their time trends in the population.

Recognition of the specificities of different groups of chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, mental disorders) and consequent implications for the epidemiological investigation of each nosologic group.

To explore prevention and management of chronic diseases, namely the intervention in the main risk factors.

Individual Project

This curricular unit should contribute to develop the sudents' ability to plan original research through the acquisition of skills in the different components of planning (literature review, selection and discussion of methods, strategies of data analysis, ethics).
