Courses Units

Molecular and cellular biology I

PDCCV_4 - ECTS The contents in this course include various methodologies ranging from good laboratory practice to histology and cell culture. These tools will allow students to identify and interpret myocardial gene expression changes underlying cardiovascular diseases.


PDCCV_10 - ECTS Transmit knowledge and technical principles of echocardiography and its clinical applications to the most important heart diseases.

Heart failure

PDCCV_32 - ECTS Acquire knowledge of epidemiology of heart failure (HF); and design a treatment program for patients with HF.

Introduction to epidemiology

PDCCV_2 - ECTS Update in essential epidemiology, and to demonstrate (T) or discuss with students (LW) its application for a valid evaluation of health care.

Mechanisms of cardiac injury

PDCCV_12 - ECTS Transmit knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of cell injury in cardiac diseases.

Statistical methods in health sciences


Acquisition of knowledge on the primary and most used statistical concepts, models and techniques. Choice and application of the most adequate statistical methodology according to the nature of the study.  Ability to critically analyse and interpret the results obtained from the learnt statistical methods (in their own works and in those from others). In summary, the student is expected to be scientifically autonomous regarding basic statistical analysis.

Cardiovascular Morphophysiology - Level II


Transmit a detailed knowledge on the morphophysiology of the cardiovascular system, as well as some physiopathological principles.

Cardiovascular risk

PDCCV_8 - ECTS 1. Definition and characterization of the main risk factors of cardiovascular disease and the explanation of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these risk factors in the development of cardiovascular diseases

2.  Acquisition of additional knowledge in the field of food/nutrition and its association to the etiology, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease

Seminars I

PDCCV13_2 - ECTS Provide students with more information in the cardiovascular area, namely methodologies available and study groups for potential collaborations.

Sleep apnea: cardiovascular frontier

PDCCV_21 - ECTS This curricular unit will allow stutends to obtain knowledge in emergent topics related with Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

In vitro heart and vascular muscles physiological evaluation

PDCCV_14 - ECTS This curricular unit will allow the knowledge to set up and to interpret the several models of cardiac and vascular smooth muscle function evaluation in vitro.

Invasive hemodynamic evaluation

PDCCV_15 - ECTS Approach the major methodologies for evaluation of pressures, flows and volumes on the cardiovascular system, including simple evaluation of ventricular pressure and joint assessment of pressure and volume, including the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

Molecular and cellular biology II

PDCCV_16 - ECTS Endow students with the necessary theoretical and practical concepts to understand, apply and overcome practical problems inherent to molecular and cell biology techniques essential for cardiovascular research.

Valvular heart disease

PDCCV_9 - ECTS Approach several aspects of valvular and ischemic heart disease, from pathophysiology to treatment targets.

Comunicação e Publicação Científica - nível II

PDCCV13_4 - ECTS The main goal of this module is the acquisition of knowledge and training essential for the transmission of experimental results in the oral and written form for a scientific public.

Cardiovascular development and congenital cardiopathies


Cardiovascular disease and kidney

PDCCV_31 - ECTS Know the risk factors, traditional and non-traditional, to justify the increased cardiovascular risk in chronic kidney disease and the pathophysiology of the most frequent events and complications in this patient population.

PDCCV13_8 - ECTS The syllabus will endow the students with the necessary concepts to understand and apply the knowledge that
this course unit is intended to teach.

ECMO no Doente Crítico

PDCCV13_9 - ECTS The course contents are intended to update the different ECMO applications in the treatment of heart failure and severe respiratory patient critical.

Cardiovascular epidemiology

PDCCV_20 - ECTS Students will be asked to critically appraise the causes of certain patterns of disease distribution in populations, as well as to assess the effect of certain health policies/interventions.

Clinical epidemiology

PDCCV_19 - ECTS Cover the methodologies used to evaluate quantitavely the validyt and precision of diagnostic tests, allowing the students to make evidencebased decisions regarding the usefulness of a specific diagnostic test in a specific patient.

Animal experimentation

PDCCV_13 - ECTS Prepare students for the appropriate use of animals in scientific research, through the acquisition of knowledge of the fundamental principles of animal experimentation.

Systemic hypertension

PDCCV_28 - ECTS It is intended to understand the role of several homeostatic cardiovascular mechanisms in blood pressure regulation.

Pulmonary hypertension

PDCCV_29 - ECTS Obtain knowledge of cellular and molecular mechanisms and of experimental models of the disease.

Cardiovascular imagiology

PDCCV_11 - ECTS Endow the students with necessary clinical knowledge and  critical approaches required as a specialist in cardiovascular diseases.

Modelos Animais e Ecocardiografia Cardiovascular

PDCCV13_11 - ECTS This unit aims to give students a strong theoretical knowledge of experimental models that enable them to choose the model that best fits the research project that they will develop.

PhD thesis project

PDCCV13_5 - ECTS The curricular unit aims student works more independently and allows to guide the student in his process of research and data analysis and project planning.

Cardiovascular psychosomatics

PDCCV_25 - ECTS Address the latest nuclear themes of Psychosomatics and Liaison Psychiatry at the Cardiovascular Area, and provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for their deeper training.

Seminars II

PDCCV13_6 - ECTS Provide the students with the opportunity to attend innovative research topics as well as to contact and establish potential collaborations with experts from different areas of cardiovascular research. By assisting to these seminars the student will acquire the capacity to sinthetyse and select novel information.

Seminars III

PDCCV13_10 - ECTS Acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of Cardiovascular Sciences, along with specific knowledge within the field of student’s PhD thesis project.

Autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular disease

PDCCV_24 - ECTS Acquire knowledge of the main methodologies for assessing the autonomic nervous system through simple subtle variations in biological signals (blood pressure and heart rate). The time domain and frequency domain variability will be detailed and discussed with students. The impact of the autonomic control in maintaining upright posture will be focused and live in-person reviews in patients during tilt-table tests will be provided.
