It will also enable the students to access the state-of-the-art in specific areas of their thesis, by participating in advanced courses, in which they may assist to clinical case reports, workshops and round tables by experts.

Learning outcomes and competences

The purpose of the unit is to provide students with technical and scientific skills useful for their thesis. Lab rotations will be a means to identify innovative  methodologies that are ongoing in distinct laboratories in the area of metabolism. Participation in advanced courses will enable the student to obtain a broad perspective regarding a specific topic, as well as to contact with international experts in topics relevant to their thesis.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Students will participate in international lab rotations. Several institutions and researchers have already accepted to host students in their labs, namely several departments from other faculties and associated labs of the University of Porto; Center of Neurosciences, University of Coimbra; University of Cambridge; University of Cordoba, and Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The students can further suggest to the scientific commission an institution of his/her interest. The PI or Head of department must sign a reportregarding the activity of the student in the lab.

A certificate is required for the participation in advanced courses signed by the scientific committee of the course.

Assessment will be done by a short written report by the student, with the whole activities performed within the unit (either lab rotations and/or advanced course participation), and e letter by the PI/head of department and a certificate ensuring the participation of the student in the advanced course.
