Objectives

Students are expected to acquire knowledge and develop basic skills for carrying out scientific projects in the cardiovascular area that require the use of cellular biology or hystological techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences


  1. Understand the basic principles underlying a proper collection, preservation and processing of biological samples for hystology or cell culture.

  2. Plan and execute at least 2 laboratorial techniques, among the following: specimens preservation and processing until inclusion, coloration and quantification of cellular or extracellular components using optical microscopy, immunohistochemistry or cell culture.

  3. Develop an experimental protocol using hystology and/or cell biology techniques.

  4. Solve scientific problems.

  5. Critically evaluate scientific papers of the area.

  6. Analyse and present scientific results arising from the used techniques.

Program

To provide knowledge and develop advanced skills for carrying out scientific projects in the cardiovascular area that requires the use of histology and cell biology techniques, including to:

1.Basic histology, including samples preservation, fixation, inclusion, sectioning and staining. The particularities of several tissue to each technique will be highlighted.

2.Basic knowledge and techniques on cell culture, including asseptic techniques, establishment of primary cell cultures and maintenance of imortalized cell lines.

3.Immunohistochemistry analysis.

4.Primary cultures of cardiomyocytes, adipocytes and fibroblasts mentioning each cell type particularities.

5.Conditioned media production and characterization.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final evaluation will be based on:

  1. 25%: continuous assessment based on students-teachers interaction during the hours of contact in particular laboratorial classes.
  2. 50%: classification obtained in a final written exam comprising 20 multiple choice or fast-answer questions.
  3. 25%: E-learning module whose evaluation will be based on literature research and a summary presentation about the selected topic.
Student should assist  to 80% of all classes.
