Objectives

Acquire knowledge and develop basic skills for carrying out scientific projects in the cardiovascular area that require the use of molecular techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expect to:

1.Learn and follow good laboratorial practices.

2.Understand the basic principles underlying a proper collection, preservation and processing of biological samples for molecular analysis.

3.Plan and execute at least two techniques of molecular biology, among the following: extraction, quantification and analysis of DNA, extraction, quantification and analysis of mRNA or extraction, quantification and analysis of protein.

4.Develop an experimental protocol using molecular biology techniques.

5.Solve scientific problems.

6.Critically evaluate scientific papers of the area.

7.Analyse and present scientific results arising from the used techniques.

Other: 14 hours

Laboratory Practices: 24 hours

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 50,00
Trabalho escrito 25,00
Trabalho laboratorial 25,00
Total: 100,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Final evaluation will be based on:

  1. 25%: continuous assessment based on students-teachers interaction during the hours of contact in particular laboratorial classes.
  2. 50%: classification obtained in a final written exam comprising 20 multiple choice or fast-answer questions.
  3. 25%: E-learning module whose evaluation will be based on literature research and a summary presentation about the selected topic.

Student should assist  to 80% of all classes.
