The contents in this course include various methodologies ranging from good laboratory practice to histology and cell culture. These tools will allow students to identify and interpret myocardial gene expression changes underlying cardiovascular diseases.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expect to acquire knowledge and develop basic skills for carrying out scientific projects in the cardiovascular area that require the use of molecular and cellular techniques. This includes to:

  1. Learn and follow good laboratorial practices.
  2. Understand the basic principles underlying a proper collection, preservation and processing of biological samples for molecular or cellular analysis.
  3. Plan and execute at least two techniques of molecular and cellular biology and cellular, among the following: processing and analysing DNA, mRNA, protein, cell cultures or histology.
  4. Develop an experimental protocol using molecular and cell biology techniques.
  5. Solve scientific problems.
  6. Critically evaluate scientific papers of the area.
  7. Analyse and present scientific results arising from the used techniques.

Working method

1.DNA and mRNA quantification and analysis.

2.Protein quantification and analysis.

3.Genomic, transcriptomics and proteomics.

5.Cell culture techniques.

Practical classes:

1.Quantification of RNA and proteins levels.

2.Histology and cell culture.

1.Critical analysis of results derived from molecular analysis techniques.
