The main aim of this discipline is to acquaint the students with the basic concepts of study design, data collection process and data analysis. The program covers the traditional topics of basic biostatistics, which are illustrated with computer-generated analyses.
The student is expected to achieve the following goals: (1) Planning and/or participating in biological research, comparing alternative ways for a data collection process; (2) Organizing data files, choosing the adequate measurement scale; (3) Interpreting the distribution of a series of measurements, in a way their relevant characteristics may be presented, summarized and represented graphically; (4) Translating the study objective in statistical hypotheses, interpreting correctly the results obtained.
Biological data and its graphical display; Descriptive statistics; Probability and probability distributions; Sampling and sampling distributions; Basic concepts of statistical inference; Inferences concerning means; Inferences concerning proportions; Linear regression; Correlation; Use of packages for mathematical and statistical analysis.
