Objectives

It is expected that the students acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills that allow them to profit from pediatric hospital practice and clinical pediatric practice, assessing the child and adolescent’s clinical and social development in such basic specific aspects such as growth, development and nutrition in the several age groups and being introduced to practical applications, primary prevention, and immunisations, and the more common pathologies, namely in emergency situations, as well as family and community integration.

Programme

Teaching and learning activities occur with the active participation of the students who will be integrated into the group work that assures their attendance to children and adolescents in the ambulatory and in the internment of the Pediatrics Department. For achievement of the objectives it is our purpose, if possible, to provide the students with the possibility of performing a supervised training in a Health Center for a better knowledge of the healthy child and adolescent, their integration in the family and in the community and of the practices of preventive medicine (immunisations, and intervention in areas of health in the local area networks of the preschool and school teaching). In clinical practice the student is required and, should have the possibility, of integrating knowledge, attitudes and skills that were acquired in the previous years (semiology, clinical and social pathology specific of the pediatrics and the knowledge of the basic and closely related clinical disciplines).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each group will have a total of 5 weeks, corresponding to 25 working days with a schedule of 34 hours – weekly. During the 5 weeks, the students will work as trainees in the wards and in the emergency service: in the emergency service the students will be integrated into the teams of their Teaching Assistants, 12 hours/week; they will attend the meetings of the Service, all being compulsory and making part of the learning activities and of the assessment program: a) Mondays – presentation of clinical cases by the students; b) Thursdays - pediatric themes; c) Fridays - presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
Daily, there will be seminars/discussions concerning the pathologies of the patients observed and presented by the students, with the duration of one hour. During the supervised training, the students will have to: a) fill out the supervised training notebook, where they write, especially the clinical histories of the emergency and elaborate clinical histories of interned patients and their specific medical problems; b) elaborate 2 complete clinical histories, that will be presented in the final assessment, one of them with special emphasis on the social history in the patient’s home.
