Molecular Medicine and Oncology

InformationThe course information is being edited.

The syllabus consists of an initial lectural part and the development of an original research project. The lectural part is composed of core and optional curricular units. They include seminars, general sessions or focused on specific scientific problems; it is possible to take courses and internships from different institutions. The format of the lectural part is adaptable by the scientific committee to each student, trying to match their specific objectives.

It is expected that the interdisciplinarity of the activities of this part and the permanent relation between the molecular medicine, oncology, biology and genetics, will allow the formulation of problems of medical nature that will be the starting point for the elaboration of the doctoral project. Its implementation can be done in any institutions that collaborate with the PD or in others duly qualified and considered adequate to the PhD student by the supervising team and the scientific committee of the PhD program.

The PhD programme is organized by the Faculty of Medicine of Porto (FMUP) in conjunction with the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS). It is made also in association with the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), the Institute of Molecular Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBMC/INEB), now associated in the i3S (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde), the University Hospital of S. João and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto.

Some topics in the lectural part: Molecular Biology, Cell Cycle and Apoptosis, Human Genetics and Disease, Oncobiology, Molecular Cytogenetics, Angiogenesis in Inflammation and Cancer, Pharmacogenomics and Molecular Epidemiology, Heart Failure, Epigenetics and Cancer, Endocrine Pathology, Gerontology, Molecular Biology Techniques (Hands on unit).

1. Holders of graduation in the fields of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Veterinary Medicine or holders of the «Mestrado Integrado» degree in the same fields according to «Bologna Process», obtained in portuguese universities.

2. Holders of similar or legally equivalent degrees, from other universities, upon review by the scientific committee.

The PhD programme in MMO is purposed to prepare «medical scientists» for the present and the future. To this achievement, it will seek to create conditions for learning the so-called New Medicine (or Personalized Medicine), integrating medical knowledge with the language and tools of Molecular Biology, applied to diagnosis, therapeutics and prognosis.

In this way, the PhD program aims to generate conditions conducive to the execution of a clinical investigation or translation project, using molecular methods, which will serve as a basis for the dissertation, necessary to obtain the Degree.
