Molecular Medicine and Oncology

The MSc in Molecular Medicine and Oncology is a programme of study which leads to the Degree of Master of Science in Molecular Medicine and Oncology.

The MSc includes a lectural year made up of core and optional subjects, seminars or specific course attendance, as well as laboratory work and short term trainings for skill development, at different institutions.
It is hoped that the interdisciplinary nature of that year will allow the recognition of specific areas of interest and generate ideas and problems that may become the starting point to the build-up of a project, antedating the preparation of the essay and the achievement of the degree.
The development of the project may be done in institutions cooperating with the MSc or others, provided thay have recognized quality and are considered adequate by the student, the supervisor and the scientific committee.

The MSc Programme is organized by Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (FMUP) in cooperation with Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) and in a close relationship with Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidade do Porto (IPATIMUP), Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular/Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (IBMC/INEB), Centro Hospitalar S. João and Instituto Português de Oncologia, Porto.

It is coordinated by Prof. Henrique Almeida and the Scientific Committee includes Professors Davide Carvalho, Manuel Sobrinho Simões and Rui Medeiros. Professors Delminda Neves and Valdemar Máximo compose the Accompanying Committee.

Topics in the lectural programme: Molecular Biology, Molecular Biology Techniques (Hands-on), Cell Cycle & Apoptosis, Human Genetics and Disease, Oncobiology, Molecular Cytogenetics, Angiogenesis in Inflammation and Cancer, Pharmacogenomics and Molecular Epidemiology, Cardiac Insufficiency, Epigenetics and Cancer, Gerontology, Endocrine Pathology.

The MSc is commited to strenghten biomedical knowledge, to stimulate the interest in learning deeper and to encourage an attitude towards problem presentation and its resolution, employing strategies and methods developed by Molecular Biology.

1- Graduates in Biology, Biochemistry, Marine Science, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Microbiologia and other life science fields, having minimal classification of 14/20 (Good), obtained in a portuguese university or having a degree legally considered equivalent.
2 — Graduates with classification inferior to 14/20, upon evaluation by the scientific committee.
3 — Similarly, graduates from foreign universities are eligible upon evaluation by the scientific committee.

Selection criteria

a) CV evaluation, to include activities before and after graduation, and scientific and professional experience. Graded from 0 to 10 and accounting for 60% of the final classification.
b) Interview, aiming at an additional assessment of the candidates abilities, scientific, professional and personal in general either as well as their own objectives. Graded from 0 to 10 and accounting for 40% of the final classification.
Final classification will result from the proportional sum of CV evaluation and interview. Higher ability in the topis will be preferred.
