The Doctoral Programme in Cardiovascular Sciences aims to endow students with an advanced training in this field of knowledge. The promotion of the scientific research in an area with such an importance taking into account its predominance, incidence, morbidity and mortality is also one of our objectives. Cardiovascular diseases are, in fact, the first cause of death in Portugal and throughout the western world, being forecasted to continue that way in the upcoming decades. The non existence of a similar doctoral programme in this area in Portugal, and the fact that this area needs to be studied and researched, played a major role in creating this programme.
