Abstract (EN): Accounting history scholarship and research cover many topics and many types of organisations. However, this book was particularly motivated by a lack of research on what we might term a very particular but at the same time quite ubiquitous setting: the alcoholic drinks sector. As an example of a similar situation in another particular yet ubiquitous setting, Funnell (2009, pp. 561-562) comments on the relative lack of historic accounting research on the military sector, which is surprising given not only expected specificities in such a setting but also the occurrence of wars and military activities throughout time across the world. Similarly, the making and consumption of alcohol are quite ubiquitous throughout the years and around the world; moreover, the topic has been the subject of numerous controversies and regulations, and has involved organisations that not only tend to have specific characteristics but may also be of significant economic and social relevance. Despite this, the accounting history literature is surprisingly scarce of research on the sector and organisations within. © 2019 selection and editorial matter, Martin Quinn and João Oliveira; individual chapters, the contributors.
