Objectives

The main objective of the PROSTHODONTICS I curricular unit is to introduce students to the field of prosthodontics, covering topics related to fixed and removable prostheses. As such, this course includes the following objectives:

- Fixed Prostheses: Understand concepts and terminology, and the stages of fixed rehabilitation in simple cases. Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory procedures, materials, and new technologies for the manufacture of inlays, crowns, and small bridges. Practice dental preparations and temporary restorations in the preclinical setting.

- Removable Prosthesis: Acquire knowledge and skills for the rehabilitation of partially edentulous patients with removable prostheses. Understand the laboratory steps for the manufacture of skeletal prostheses.

Learning outcomes and competences

Learning in this curricular unit should enable students to:

- Carry out dental preparations on posterior teeth and provisional restorations within the scope of Fixed Prosthodontics;

- Planning and carrying out laboratory steps, including the production of individual impression trays and intermaxillary registration plates, as well as the design of a removable partial denture (RPP).

Program

The programme contents of this curricular unit are subdivided as follows:
Theoretical and Theoretical-Practical classes:
- Fixed prosthetic options; General principles of crowns and bridges on teeth/implants; General principles of dental preparations.
- General introduction to Removable Partial Prosthesis (RPP). Classification of partially edentulous arches. Biomechanics of the RPP. Analysing parallelometer models. Components of the RPP. Principles of planning and designing the RPP.
Practical Laboratory classes:
- Dental preparation - posterior ceramic crowns; Provisional restorations - pre-impression technique.
- Production of plaster models. Making individual upper and lower trays. Production of intermaxillary registration plates for PPR. Parallelometer analysis. Report on the activities carried out.

Teaching methods and learning activities

- Theoretical (T), Theoretical-Practical (TP) and Laboratory Practical (PL) classes;

- Demonstration of techniques in fixed and removable prostheses by the teacher and/or prosthesis technician (through videos and discussion of knowledge);
- Practical training in dental preparations, on models, and performing temporary restorations, under direct supervision;
- Development of skills in PPR Co-Cr planning;
- Individual production of individual trays;
- Individual production of intermaxillary registration plates for PPR;
- Analysis of models using a parallelometer;

- Distributed assessment without a final exam, including skills assessment using the OSCE methodology (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of at least 75% of the theoretical-practical and laboratory-practical classes. Presentation of the work requested by the teacher (minimum precondition for distributed assessment and access to the final exam).

TP and PL classes - Recorded by the teacher and/or computer system.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade for the course is calculated based on:
- Practical in-person assessment - 50% (includes submission of works and/or completion of a practical in-person test, depending on the course content in question).

- Two theoretical in-person tests - 50%.

Approval criteria

- A grade lower than 9.50 in the practical in-person test or in the theoretical tests will result in failure of the curricular unit. In the practical assessment, the minimum grade for each work is 8.00 and the average grade for all works must not be lower than 9.5. In the practical test, the minimum grade is 9.5.

Special Cases:

- A grade of 17 or higher requires a mandatory oral exam. If this exam is not taken, the grade will be adjusted to 16.

- Voluntary scientific work, in groups of 1 to 3 students, may be considered to account for 10% of the practical assessment grade.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Appeal period and other assessments

Appeals, improvement and exceptional assessments include a written and/or oral test and a pre-clinical practical test.
