Program

Examination and Diagnosis - Carry out a thorough and appropriate assessment and examination of the patient, their dental, pulpal, periradicular, periodontal, oral and peri-oral tissues in relation to the presenting complaints of the patient, arriving at an appropriate diagnosis of the condition from the information provided and examination and investigations undertaken; Clearly appreciate the conditions confounding diagnosis of prosthodontic problems.

Implantology - Indications and contraindications of dental implants. Analysis of CT scans and other appropriate radiographic images. Implant systems. Formulate appropriate treatment plans for implant retained fixed or removable prostheses, while working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to achieve optimum outcomes for the patient; Complete surgical and radiographic guides to aid planning of number, position and angulation of fixtures; Construct and deliver provisional and definitive implant-retained or supported prostheses.

Development of treatment strategies and plans in Prosthodontic - Devise strategies and plans based on the likely prognosis and outcomes of the various treatment options, relating this to prognosis without treatment and establishing a resultant priority and sequence of treatment while considering the relevant ethical and financial issues.

Fixed Prosthodontics (single fixed restorations and small and medium span bridges) - Plan and provide all types of fixed dental prostheses for appropriate clinical circumstances; Understand and use the appropriate techniques, materials and technologies available for all types of fixed dental prostheses (including general principles and surgical techniques of dental preparation, restoration of endodontically treated teeth, gingival retraction, impressions and custom emergency profile); Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of fixed prosthodontic treatment.

Removable Prosthodontics (classic and implant overdentures) - Plan and provide dentures with the appropriate clinical and technical procedures; Understand the materials and technologies available for all types of removable dental prostheses; undertake procedures to necessary to extend lifespan of the prostheses.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching through classes theoretical-practical classes, using audiovisual means and practical demonstrations (implant systems, ceramic veneers, indirect restorations, emergence profile, attachments in removable dentures).

Some classes are taught by guest professors from other universities and industry.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Trabalho escrito 30,00
Teste 70,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 53,00
Frequência das aulas 28,00
Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of at least 75% of the lessons.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is calculated taking into account the following parameters:

Written test - 70% The absence from the testing, or grade below 9.5 points implies the failure in the continuous assessment. The student can make final exam (normal time and / or resource season).

Scientific work (Revision or research project for written work) or lecture in power-point (15 minutes) – 30% Theme, content and work scheme previously approved by the Regent.

Final score equal or higher than 17 points has to be defended in oral exam. If the student does not attend the oral exam will get the final score of 16 points. The oral test never leads to rating less than 16 points.
