Objectives

The ORAL REHABILITATION II UC has 6 ECTS and 3 scientific-pedagogical modules (FIXED PROSTHESIS MODULE; REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS MODULE; OCCLUSION AND OROFACIAL PAIN MODULE), and T and TP classes on new themes and presentation and discussion of cases, with the following OBJECTIVES and PROGRAM CONTENT.

Learning outcomes and competences

Be competent in:

- concepts and terminologies of the CU;

- medical history and treatment planning for oral rehabilitation, with various options and costs;

-supervised clinical practice in patients of basic Fixed Prosthodontic procedures (inlays, crowns and ceramic or metal-ceramic short-span bridges), Removable Prosthodontics (partial and full dentures, acrylic and skeletal), and Occlusion (therapies for temporomandibular disorders and fabrication and adjustment of stabilization appliances in semi-adjustable articulator);

-psycomotor skills and aesthetic sensibility;

 Acquire knowledge on:

-laboratory procedures for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Occlusion and Orofacial Pain (occlusal appliances);

-new technologies related to the CU.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Practical classes with patients at the clinic of FMDUP, including:

- medical history and clinical examination of the patient;

- study of clinical cases and treatment planning, uni or multi-disciplinary, with alternative strategies and the corresponding budgets, that will be approved by the professor and presented to the patient, in a written document. Discussion of all procedures with the supervising professor;

- clinical management of patients (2 students per box), under supervision, for rehabilitation with Fixed Prosthesis (inlays, crowns and short-span bridges) or Removable Prosthesis (partial and full dentures, acrylic and skeletal); of Occlusion and Orofacial Pain (therapy for temporomandibular disorders: intra-oral appliances; occlusal balance; fabrication and adjustment of occlusal stabilization appliances);

- live demonstration on patients, conducted by the professor, of less common clinical situations.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methodologies: Clinical practice supervised by a graduate teacher.

This CU emcompasses diverse teaching methods, in accordance with the syllabus and the defined objectives.

Thus, clinical classes are held, in which students have the opportunity to demonstrate the previously acquired knowledge on Fixed Prosthodontic, Removable Prosthodontics and Occlusion in the management of simple cases of oral rehabilitation.

The medical history and treatment planning, with the corresponding alternatives, are previously conducted and assessed. The agreed treatment option is thorougly discussed, always considering a sequential, inter- and multidisciplinary perspective.

In less common clinical situations, live practical demonstrations are performed by the professor.

It should be emphasized that supervised clinical training is the internationally recommended methodology to develop students' competence in the treatment of simple cases of oral rehabilitation with removable prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, occlusion and orofacial pain.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance: Attendance in at least 75% of classes in each of the 3 scientific-pedagogical modules.

Presentation of the work requested by the teacher.

T/TP CLASSES and CLINICAL PRACTICAL CLASSES - In each class, each student must sign the attendance sheet or the teacher marks the attendance sheet (depending on the scientific-pedagogical module).

According to Regulation no. 40/2022 - Amendments to the Regulation of the Student Worker Statute of the University of Porto, namely in its Article 8.º no. 2 - “Without prejudice to the provisions of paragraph b) of the previous paragraph, the student worker is not exempt from carrying out assessment acts, including distributed assessment, which are a minimum pre-condition for access to the final exam, if one exists and in accordance with what is established in the respective curricular unit form”.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final classification:

A¬ Calculated by the weighted average of the classifications of each scientific-pedagogical module: FIXED PROSTHESIS MODULE – 41.6%; REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS MODULE – 33.3%; OCCLUSION AND OROFACIAL PAIN MODULE – 25%

Insufficient classification in one or more scientific-pedagogical modules implies failure in the UC.
Partial assessment standards may differ in the different scientific-pedagogical modules:

FIXED PROSTHESIS:
    Assessment of clinical practice, taking into account attendance and punctuality, familiarity with the procedure, the quality and quantity of necessary teaching support, the level of clinical procedure, the correct assessment of the clinical result and the use of the defined clinical protocol. – 80%
If it is not possible to assign a final grade in the scientific area, the student will be classified with 8 values (if they have attendance). This grade may be changed through a theoretical test and/or oral exam and pre-clinical practical test.
     All FIXED PROSTHESIS work carried out in clinical practical classes must be registered, duly identified (preliminary models, silicone impressions, provisional restorations, models, etc.) and delivered to the responsible teacher for evaluation. (minimum precondition for distributed assessment and access to the final exam).
     Assessment of power-point reports for each patient observed/treated – 20% (minimum precondition for distributed assessment and access to the final exam).
        If voluntary scientific work is carried out in groups of 1 to 3 students, your classification may count on a weighting of 10% in this scientific-pedagogical module (the remaining 90% is the final grade referred to in the previous items).

The evaluation of scientific work never reduces the grade.

REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS:
Assessment of clinical practice, attendance and punctuality; autonomy; theoretical knowledge inherent to the clinical case; the quality in preparing a clinical history and administering the clinical examination according to the defined protocol, the level and quality of the clinical procedure. 80%

All REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS work carried out in clinical practical classes must be registered, duly identified (impressions, prepared niches, models, etc.) and delivered to the responsible teacher for evaluation.

Evaluation of power-point reports for each patient observed/treated – 20%

OCCLUSION AND OROFACIAL PAIN
Assessment of clinical practice, attendance and punctuality; autonomy; theoretical knowledge inherent to the clinical case; the quality in preparing a clinical history and administering the clinical examination according to the defined protocol, the level and quality of the clinical procedure. 80%

Evaluation of power-point reports for each patient observed/treated – 20%

The professors responsible for each module/disciplinary area present their final grade proposal to the UC Regent.

Classification improvement

B¬ Classification ≥17 requires oral exam or becomes 16.

Assessment in the appeal, grade improvement and extraordinary periods includes theoretical test and/or oral exam and pre-clinical practical test.

The Appeal exam in the same semester may include all modules or only modules with insufficient marks.

The professors responsible for each module/disciplinary area present their final grade proposal to the UC Regent.
