Objectives

It is intended that students apply and consolidate the knowledge acquired in the previous units of conservative dental medicine, establishing diagnoses and treatment plans that coordinate treatments of operative dentistry and endodontics, with added complexity. They should be able to diagnose pulp and periapical injuries, identify traumatic injuries and propose the most appropriate treatments (endodontics and restoratives) in each specific clinical situation. Whenever possible, execute and complete the proposed treatment plan, applying the most appropriate materials and techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences

The programmatic content enables the fulfillment of the given goals that allow the clinical practice of prevention, diagnosis, treatment plan and treatment on patients with dental caries and other diseases affecting the hard tissues of the tooth as well as with clinical cases of traumatology, dental sensitivity and color changes and endodontic treatment. Learn to share with patients the diagnosis and prognosis of the problems of Operative Dentistry and Endodontology and acquire the capacity to diagnose, make decisions and plan in order to propose treatment plans for their resolution.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes TP:

Expository classes related to clinical classes.

Classes P:

Patient care at the clinic, where dentistry and endodontic treatments are performed.

Students will form groups of two units (operator + assistant, alternately), being in solidarity in clinical work and evaluated according to this principle. The operator must perform all the actions provided for in the clinical protocols (from clinical history to the completion of treatment). The assistant must exercise the role of dental assistant, preparing all the material necessary for the clinical act and helping the colleague, so that the same act can be considered to have been carried out by “four hands”.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed evaluation without final exam.

Continuous assessement with the following weight factors:

                                1- Component TP-30%

                                2- Component P-70%

                            1- Composition of evaluation TP

Written assessment of the syllabus of dentistry and endodontics covered in  TP classes.

                    1-Evaluation of component P in Dentistry-50%:

Evaluation about student diagnosis capacity, planning treatment, treatment execution, comunication with pacient.

Duly completed forms must be shown to teachers who are following the clinical cases.

It is mandatory to deliver a report of the best work carried out by the student (the student chooses) - submit it on Moodle.

Note on the clinical case report carried out (10%), weight with the assessment of performance (90%) during patient care.

                  2-Avaliation of componernt P in Endodontic 50%:

Assessment of diagnostic capacity, planning and
execution of endodontic treatment.

The assessment is carried out in each clinical class,
during the execution of the endodontic treatment and
completed after the student submits the clinical
information and Rx of each case to Moodle.
The evaluation form remains with the endodontics
teachers. The teacher at the clinic assigns a grade
to each of the parameters listed on the form. It is
the student's responsibility to ensure the presence
of the teacher for the assessment at each stage.
For example, before starting treatment, you must ask
the endodontics teacher present at the clinic to
validate and evaluate the diagnosis.

When the endodontic treatment is completed, the Rx
of the entire treatment must be submitted to Moodle,
with the following information: name of the student
who performed the clinical procedure, patient code
and date of the last consultation.
Folders will be created in Moodle, by date,
and you have one week, after completing the treatment,
to submit the Rx.

The final classification is the arithmetic mean of
endodontics and dentistry considering the weighting
factors mentioned above.

Examinations or Special Assignments

In exceptional situations, when the practical work done by the student is not sufficient for evaluation, teachers can request a written assignment on a topic to be defined or an extra clinical or preclinical work.

Classification improvement

Evaluation of a clinical case in Dentistry or in Endodontics and the respective report.
