Objectives

1. Understand the concept of neoplasia as alteration of growth and differentiation of cells / tissues


2. Understand the bases of classification and recognize the main types of human neoplasia


3. Recognize the main tumorigenic agents and their mechanisms of action


4. Identify the main stages of neoplastic development and the underlying biological characteristics


5. Recognize the genetic, epigenetic and molecular bases underlying the process of tumorigenesis


6. Understand the role played by Pathological Anatomy, as a medical specialty, in the diagnostic approach and definition of patients' therapeutic strategy


7. Contextualize the anatomopathological information in the set of clinical, analytical and imaging data of the patients


8. Correlate morphological, macroscopic, microscopic, immunophenotypic and genetic changes with clinical manifestations of disease


9. Integrate the general concepts of Anatomic Pathology into the main clinical models of human disease.


10. Acquire and use appropriate medical language to discuss cases and anatomical-clinical topics

Learning outcomes and competences

1. Acquire basic concepts about the classification and epidemiological characteristics of the main types of neoplasia


2. Identify the main morphological characteristics of the most common types of human neoplasia


3. Recognize cancer as the result of the accumulation of genomic changes, based on the characteristics of the organism and its interaction with environmental agents


4. Understand the main mechanisms underlying the tumorigenesis process and its contribution to the evolution of the disease


5. Identify and understand the different stages of the diagnostic process in Pathological Anatomy, namely sample collection, macroscopic observation and description, fixation, processing, microscopic observation, special studies and report writing


6. Apply basic collection and fixation procedures for anatomopathological specimens and understand their impact on the quality of diagnostic information


7. Learn to correctly fill in the various types of anatomopathological exam requisitions and understand the importance of providing clinical information with relevance for morphological interpretation


8. Know how to correctly and critically interpret the information contained in the anatomopathological reports, recognizing the need to establish an anatomical-clinical correlation and the limitations inherent to the diagnostic approach, namely in matters of sampling and representativeness


9. Know the main types of pathology of the head and neck and the anatomopathological methods used in its diagnosis

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. 
   
   “Theoretical evaluation” component (TEC): Test consisting on multiple choice questions, based on the theoretical-practical sessions, classified from 0 to 20. Students are approved in the TEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.
   
   


2. 
   
   “Practical evaluation” component (PEC): continuous evaluation of the practical sessions based on the presentation of clinicopathologic cases/themes, scheduled for each theoretical-pratical / seminar class. This classification is expressed from 0 to 20, and students are approved in the PEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.
