Objectives
To encourage the student to attend Curricular units from U.Porto/Short advanced courses/ Laboratory internships/Other learning initiatives (workshops; summer courses; symposia; seminars), to obtain expertise in specific or translational areas considered to be an asset in the context of its thesis and its future activity.
Learning outcomes and competences
Participation in various advanced training initiatives allows (i) the learning of specific contents aimed at the implementation of the thesis work, namely new experimental approaches, improvement of knowledge in already known techniques and / or assistance by specialists in solving problems and doubts associated with the experimental work, and (ii) more comprehensive training useful for the development of a critical, autonomous and strategic spirit, as well as interpersonal skills, which should integrate the training of a PhD student with repercussions on his future professional and personal activity.

In this Course Unit (15 ECTS), PhD students will have access to the training offer made available by U. Porto, other university and research institutions, as well as laboratories / companies, in a personalized way to the training needs within the scope of their thesis work. The supervision team will play an important role in advising and selecting formative actions based on the student's scientific interests and training needs.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The teaching methods depend on the training content selected by the student, with the contribution of the supervision team. They include theoretical-practical classes, seminars, internships / other activities and a strong component of tutorial orientation.
Evaluation: The set of activities must totalize 15 ECTS. In the case of courses / activities that do not award ECTS, the teachers responsible for this UC will accredit the formation according to the duration and content of the course / activity under evaluation.

Eligibility for exams
Considering the objectives of the UC, the student has the possibility to implement the training plan that best suits the development of his thesis work. He can, therefore, combine several training models, namely the realization of UCs available at U.Porto and other institutions, specific internships, short courses, seminars and other relevant activities (for example, participation in congresses, dissemination of your work, integration in scientific discussion forums). All of these activities involve a serious commitment of the student in the learning process, thus fulfilling the objectives of the UC.
