Objectives
This course aims the preparation of the students for the development of an original research project, setting the foundation for their PhD research, within the frame of a specific domain of the Dental Medicine area. It is aimed that students develop competences on the critical exploration of the state-of-the-art, on the development of the work plan and the definition on the methodological approach, aiming for the autonomous development of the thesis project.
Learning outcomes and competences
Students will develop knowledge and technical-scientific and methodological competences, aiming for the progressive autonomy on the execution of a research project, in all its strands.

1 - General aspects of the Curricular Unit:
- Scientific and academic objectives of a PhD program.
- Regulation of the PhD Program in Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, U. Porto
- Scientific and academic objectives of a PhD thesis.
- Supervisors and co-supervisors.
2 - Identification of a research question.
3 - Bibliographic search and state-of-the-art analysis.
4 - Phases of the research development.
5 - Adequacy of the experimental design and research methodologies.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The UC involves 96 hours of tutorial guidance.
The teaching / learning methodologies are student-centered with strong tutorial guidance to clarify the syllabus and fix tasks and practical work corresponding to each of the components required for the thesis project.
