Objectives

This is a classic course of human macroscopic anatomy that is intended to impart systematic and detailed knowledge of the structure of the human body. This anatomical information will often incorporate concepts of physiology, histology and some examples of clinical medicine. Systematic Anatomy I deals with the chapters of Human Descriptive Anatomy: Osteology, Arthrology and Myology, as well as vascularization and innervation of the upper and lower limbs. During the practical classes it is intended that students acquire the ability to identify, interpret and describe the anatomical elements of the human body in a systematic and complete way, having as object of study cadaveric pieces.

Learning outcomes and competences

The Anatomy I Course I offers to the students, in a systematic way, the structural organization of the human body, appealing to the student to make frequent correlations between morphology and function. For laboratorial and practical learning of the Human Anatomy of the students, lab classes with human cadavers and / or cadaveric components are used, as well as the observation and interpretation of anatomical components available at the Anatomy Museum Prof. Nuno Grande. The knowledge to be understood by students in the practical classes is previously treated in theoretical lectures where the fundamental objectives of knowledge of each chapter of Human Anatomy are emphasized, and they must then be demonstrated by the students in their performances in the lab classes. Progress in students' knowledge is measured throughout the school year as they attend practical classes. The written evaluation of the students is carried out on several predetermined dates throughout the semester, being concluded by final practical and theoretical exams at the end of the semester.

Introduction to Human Anatomy. Anatomical terminology.

General anatomy of the bones. General anatomy of the joints. General anatomy of the muscles and fasciae.

General anatomy of the vascular and peripheral nervous systems. Vascularization and innervation of the upper and lower limb.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methods are predominantly exhibition in lectures. The practical classes will be aimed at learning complex subjects under Professor. As for the theoretical exposition far It will prevail a strong interaction between the concepts and their practical application. The classes are aimed at the integration of morphological knowledge. The transformation of concepts into working tools will be achieved by encouraging personal work. The course teaching is complemented by periods of service to students.

Eligibility for exams

According to the General Regulation of the U. Porto Learners Assessment defined in Article 7 paragraph 2 on the attendance, is considered a student fulfills the attendance to a course if, having been regularly enrolled, does not exceed the number limit faults corresponding to 25% of the foreseen classes, as regulated in the existing organizational unit, article to be applied only to the practical syllabus.

Calculation formula of final grade

The student will be able to pass the Systematic Anatomy I of the student who succeeds in one of the following three assessment processes.

1.EVALUATION DISTRIBUTED ALONG THE SEMESTER. It consists of the following components: two theoretical and practical exams to be held on the same day (i) in the interim week (in a week to be appointed by the Pedagogical Council, it will probably be the week of November) and (ii) in the final week of the semester; see composition of these exams below. These exams are priced at 9 points each (7 points for the theoretical test and 2 for the practical test). Theoretical tests require a minimum grade of 3 in 7 values and the practices ("gymkhana") require a minimum of 0.8 in 2. A maximum of 2 values will be assigned by the teacher of the practical class to each student regarding their performance over practical classes (each teacher in the practical class will define in the first practical class which criteria for continuous assessment they will apply in their classes). If the student does not attend the practical classes (more than 25% of unexcused absences), or if he misses any of the two exams, or fails to pass only one of them, he will have to present the Final Exam that will evaluate the whole subject of the discipline (if the student has obtained a positive grade in only one of the two exams done during the semester, this does not eliminate this matter of knowledge to be evaluated in the Final Exam).

  1. FINAL EXAM. It covers the entire subject of AS1 and consists of a theoretical and practical test, with a quotation of 14 values for the theoretical test, 4 values for the practical test and 2 values of the evaluation carried out in the practical classes (if repeated, the quotation will be 15 values for the theoretical exam and 5 values for the practical test). The theoretical test will consist of 45 questions, 40 of them with multiple answers and 5 questions to be answered in writing (these are worth twice as many as multiple answers). Ten of the 45 multiple-answer questions and 2 to answer in writing will be on topics covered in the theoretical-practical class (Tuesdays from 3 pm to 4 pm), that is, on the peripheral nervous system and oral anatomy (topics not offered to medical students from Anatomy ICBAS I). If the student does not succeed through the final exam, he / she will have the opportunity to take the appeal exam.
  2. APPEAL EXAMINATION. Practical test (5 points) and theoretical test (15 points). To have access to this exam the student will have to have frequency in the practical classes (presence in 75% of the classes) in the current academic year or in previous academic years. This same resource exam will be used as a grade improvement exam for students who register for it.

EXAMINATIONS OF THE INTERIM WEEK AND THE FINAL WEEK:

The mid-week exam will be held in a week to be appointed by the Pedagogical Council (probably in November); that of the final week in the last week of the semester (the exact day also to be decided by the Pedagogical Council). Both exams will have a theoretical test (7 points) and a practical test (2 points) that take place on the same day (practice in the morning; theoretical in the afternoon). Theoretical tests will consist of 30 multiple answer questions (5 paragraphs, the student can only mark 1 point, the wrong ones do not discount) and 5 questions to be answered in writing in short text (about 10 lines). Seven of the 30 multiple-answer questions and 2 to answer in writing will be on topics covered in the theoretical-practical class (Tuesdays from 3 pm to 4 pm), that is, on the peripheral nervous system and oral anatomy (topics not offered to medical students from Anatomy ICBAS I). The material that is evaluated in the mid-week exam will be excluded from the evaluation of the final week of the semester. Each question to be answered in writing will have twice the price of each multiple answer question.

PRACTICAL TESTS (OR “GINCANAS”) FOR THE INTERIM WEEK AND THE FINAL WEEK: To be held during the morning of the same days as the theoretical tests. They consist of the written identification of 2 elements in each of 10 anatomical pieces studied in practical classes or exhibited at the Museum of Anatomy. Of the 20 anatomical elements to be identified in these practical exams, the student is required to correctly identify a minimum of 8 of the 20 elements in the mid-term and final week practical tests, otherwise he will have to undergo a final or appeal exam. These exams will be the same for dental students and medical students.
