Objectives


According  to the orientation defined in the curricular unit:  Investigação em Ambiente clínico ou laboratorial I, and to better integrate the research with the clinical work, in the end of the present curricular unit  students should know:
- Evaluate the relevant clinical factors to the success of treatments in dentistry;
- Know the general aspects of epidemiology in Dentistry (retrospective studies, prospective, randomized clinical studies);
- To determine the prevalence of the most important dental pathology in different areas of dentistry;
- Evaluate and monitor clinical cases during the time recommended depending on the therapy procedures involved and the possible need for additional treatments.
To assess the difficulty of the cases to be treated.

Students participate in the practical classes (clinic) according to the specific area defined by his research project in the previous curricular unit  – The program concerns of the supervision of clinical procedures done by Master students, evaluation of the difficulty of the clinical cases of  the students, coordination and distribution of clinical cases to be controlled by the students, retrospective analysis of clinical cases and their relationship with aspects of general health, analysis of the restorability of teeth to be treated and presentation of different treatment options to students, conducting prevalence studies of certain diseases in the Faculty clinic.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In practical clinical classes students are divided by groups of undergraduate students. The teaching method is tutorial. Students have to present written reports (R) of each clinical case underlining its contribution (diagnosis, prognosis, level of difficulty). They must also document a set of clinical cases subject to a clinical subject chosen for presentation (C) at the end of the year.
