Objectives

The dentist has a responsibility to assess the overall medical condition of the patients and identify the diseases of the oral cavity. As such, this course covers the fundamentals and methods of relevant medical and dental information collection, including examination of the patient, and uses this information to provide oral health care is safe and suitable in the field of oral pathology. The student should be able to: collect the patient's medical history, examining the patient, establish a differential diagnosis, to get the additional information necessary for a final diagnosis, such as studies and consultations with other clinical laboratory and ancillary diagnostic imaging relevant formulate a treatment plan, perform the surgical procedure indicated for each oral pathology.

Learning outcomes and competences

Cognitive skills are developed through participatory exposure and resolution of clinical cases. The practical skills are developed from practical work supervised the care of patients. Communication skills are acquired through group dynamics and interaction of the student with the patient.

Thus the contact with patients in clinical FMDUP, conducting diagnosis, the development of the treatment plan and the execution of the surgical technique for the treatment of soft tissue disorders and cystic pathology, as well as the discussion of clinical cases with classmates and teachers will allow students to reach the surgical maturity necessary for the treatment of complex situations and which in themselves are only able to identify lesions in the oral cavity that may compromise the health and well-being of patients.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Without final exam, where 90% corresponds to the participation in classes  and clinical and surgical capacity of the student (elaboration of clinical history, physical examination, diagnosis, treatment and surgical technique plan) and 10% corresponds to the attendance.
