The specific objectives of UC Endodontics III is that the student know the means to:
1. Perform the pulp and periapical diagnosis in specific clinical cases;
2. Carry out treatment plans appropriate to the patient and informed consent
3. Assess the difficulty of clinical cases with endodontic treatment indication;
4. Perform endodontic treatments in clinical cases of minor difficulty;
5. Recognize the importance of the appropriate follow-up of clinical cases after endodontic tretament
6. Perform emergency treatment in endodontics;
7. Perform conservative treatments of the pulp.
In addition, it is expected that the student knows the mode of presentation of small oral presentations and understand its importance in communication with patients and colleagues.
At the end of the semester, students should know:
- To diagnose the inflammatory lesions of pulp, necrosis and apical periodontitis
- To elect the appropriate treatment and obtain informed consent
- To assess the difficulty of endodontic treatment
-To conduct conservative and emergency pulp treatments, and endodontic treatment of low difficulty
- To perform the adequate follow-up of clinical cases after endodontic treatment
They should also be able to communicate, organize and support its clinical cases and their treatment options.
Although formally there are no specific pre-requisites for Endodontics III, it is considered that students must have general knowledge of Oral biology, Anatomy, Histomorphology, Anatomy and Dental Morphology, Physiology and Pathophysiology. Furthermore it appears that the students already have some clinical experience gained in previous curricular units in clinical setting, such as Oral Surgery, Operative Dentistry, with some prior contact with patients.
Studentes should be familiar with basic clinical procedures in dentistry and local anesthesia.
Practical classes (clinical) - Conducting clinical acts that include a medical history, collection of signs and symptoms, diagnosis, differential diagnosis with endodontic pathology, preparation and presentation to the patient's treatment plan, conduct and interpretation of intra-oral radiographic examinations, determining the degree of difficulty of endodontic treatment, conducting conservative pulp treatments, emergency care in Endodontics, performing endodontic treatment in cases previously selected in mono and birradicular teeth and follow-up of previous clinical cases of endodontic treatment.
There will be no limit to the number of acts to be performed by student, provided there is equitable distribution thereof.
TP classes - Endodontic treatment demonstration in patient, clinical protocol of endodontic treatment, form assessment of the difficulty of root canal treatment , restorability of teeth, presentation and discussion of clinical cases by students.
Methodology Students are divided in groups, monitored by a professor. From each work the students write a report that is corrected by the professor and reviewed in the presence of the student.
