Objectives
- To deepen and to bring up-to-date the knowlege acquired in the orthodontic basic sciences and to guarantee information concerning actual orthodontic clinical tendencies;
- To develope knowlege in orthodontic research related themes.
Learning outcomes and competences
Orthodontics is a dentistry speciality that demand a fulltime three year specialization course to qualify a dentist to candidate to the speciality exam in the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD). Being a regulated clinical and practical profession, the teaching of the speciality is not advisable in a PhD course. Besides, orthodontics is also an important research area of dentistry with considerable scientific publications in the world. So, we thought to promote the teaching of the great controversial scientific questions that worry academic and clinic orthodontic professionals and to provide knowledge about what arrives at the present time, in order to motivate research projects in this ambit.
The teaching methods were adopted in order to optimize the acquisition of adequated knowledge and skills to perform informed basic Sciences of Orthodontics I. The teaching methods of the course have been adopted so as to optimize the acquisition of appropriate knowledge and skills to exercise informed of science of Orthodontics (I).
One of the goals of the course is to awaken interest for orthodontic research. Accordingly, the chosen content in
the field of teaching and learning were the latest and most controversial in the orthodontic specialty. Throughout the process of teaching of the discipline, will be developed to motivate the dialogue searching for themes and projects with research purposes.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The subject Sciences of Orthodontics I is organized in theoretical (T) and theoretical-practical (TP) classes.
Theoretical lectures are given with audiovisual media with images and movies. During each lesson there are 10 minutes to establish dialogues to promote educational interactivity. The TP classes are dedicated to discuss clinical cases and practical issues related to the T subject.
